Customary on Ordination 2016 (Current) Edition

“But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28

This customary explains ordained ministry in ADOTS, and overviews the processes for discernment and preparation, as well as transfer of orders and licensure.

Please read the customary first before submitting forms or documents. Applicants, please keep in mind that we can receive application forms, and begin building your file, but cannot begin the process of discernment without a letter of support from your Rector.

Priest Track Forms and Guides

For those who believe they are called to a life of ministry as a priest.

Please Note: All application forms and documents must be submitted together in one file or mailing, including a Rector Support Letter. See the Customary for detailed explanations of each step.

(Vocational) Deacon Track Forms and Guides

For use by those who believe they are called to a life of ministry as a deacon (vocational or perpetual deacon).

Please Note: All application forms and documents must be submitted together in one file or mailing, including a Rector Support Letter. See the Customary for detailed explanations of each step.

Example Seminary Student Ordinand Timeline

Attend and serve in an Anglican Church for at least 1 year and meet with Rector for Pre-Discernment (no time limit on this, up to the Rector and applicant)

Months 1-6: Parish Discernment and ADOTS Application Process

Seminary Year 1: Study and adjust to seminary life

Seminary Year 2: Diocesan Assessments and Screenings/Prep

After seminary Year 2: Ordination as Deacon

Seminary Final Year: Ordained Deacon Year

After Graduation: Priest Ordination

This process typically takes at least two to three years.

Example Post-Seminary Ordinand Timeline

Assuming seminary and educational requirements are met…
Please remember that it takes 3-6 months to complete parish discernment. Then it takes an additional 1-2 month to complete our process. Please also note that we often have to add educational requirements (we can only use parish based studies that are pre-approved by the Bishop, not previous personal studies by the candidate). We prefer candidates to complete all processes at least 60 days before scheduled ordination.  Here is an example timetable:

Attend and serve in an Anglican Church for at least 1 year and meet with Rector for Pre-Discernment (no time limit on this, up to the Rector and applicant)

Months 1-6: Parish Discernment and ADOTS Application Process

Months 7-9: Diocesan Assessments and Screenings

Months 10-11: All Completed, Retreat, prep for Ordination

Month 12: Ordination as Deacon

This process typically takes at least one year.
